Overwrought

Frank Rich offers up yet another simplistic and strained analogy written on too much caffeine.

His argument holds about as much water as suggesting that Al Gore's masseuse assault incident signals the death knell for the global warming movement.

From The New York Times:

The Good News About Mel Gibson

The reckoning has arrived for the creator of “The Passion,” whose self-destruction parallels the decline of the Christian right.

What the Font?

Nothing says "I'm really pissed off" like a typeface used in cartoon talk bubbles.

From The Wall Street Journal:

LeBron and the Revenge of Comic Sans

Lost in the vitriol over the letter Dan Gilbert wrote to Cleveland Cavaliers fans Thursday night is the counter-vitriol from tech geeks about the type of font he used — the dreaded Comic Sans.

Gilbert, the Cavaliers’ majority owner, wrote an angry letter on the team’s website after LeBron James’s nationally televised announcement that he was leaving the team. It cited what he called James’s “cowardly betrayal” of the team and called the TV event a “narcissistic, self-promotional build-up.”

The open letter from Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert to Cleveland fans, written in Comic Sans. For whatever reason, all 421 words of the screed were written in the less-than-intimidating Comic Sans font. This fact is already on the Comic Sans Wikipedia page and it was all over Twitter shortly after Gilbert’s letter was published. A Tweet from Jsmooth995 decried Gilbert’s choice, saying “nobody who posts official statements in Comic Sans MS should be running an NBA team.”

The Voice of Summer

In his 1974 autobiography, "Me and the Spitter," major league pitcher Gaylord Perry noted that when on the road, he would actually scout opposing batters (their strengths, weaknesses, tendencies, etc.) by listening to Ernie Harwell broadcasts. That speaks volumes.

Godspeed Ernie.

Suffer The Children

I think the church is overreacting here. A more vanilla, upbeat Stations of the Cross depiction kinda misses the point. No?

From The Washington Post:

Texas church bans child's photograph of Passion

Some find Jackson Potts II's photograph of a nightstick-wielding policeman beating a fallen, bleeding child violent and offensive, conjuring images of police brutality and child
abuse.

But to Jackson, a talented 10-year-old Houston photographer, and a cadre of art lovers, the disturbing image has religious symbolism.

Jackson shot the photograph for an exhibit depicting the Stations of the Cross, but the show's organizers rejected it, sparking a controversy some say is overshadowing remembrance of Jesus' final hours during the season of Lent.

...Jackson was assigned to portray the seventh Station of the Cross, where Jesus fell for a second time while carrying the cross to the site of his crucifixion. The home-schooled fifth-grader, who is taking a class on religious symbols in art at a Catholic church, decided to do a modern depiction of Christ being beaten by a Roman soldier.

Reds

Yesterday, in honor of St. Patrick's Day, MSN published a list of "All Time Hottest Redheads" which I've copied below. As Raquel Welch was omitted to make room for the likes of Lindsey Lohan, Rupert Grint, and Conan O'Brien, I can't personally sanction it.

12. Lindsey Lohan
11. Emma Stone
10. Rupert Grint
9. Julianne Moore
8. Conan O'Brien
7. Ann-Margret
6. Isla Fisher
5. Nicole Kidman
4. Prince Harry
3. Rita Hayworth
2. Ewan McGregor

From CBS News:
Rielle Hunter Pictures in GQ are "Repulsive," Says John Edwards' Lover

Rielle Hunter may not regret breaking her silence, but the GQ photo shoot which shows her pantless is breaking her heart.

The Day The Music Died

MTV programming reminds me of Sears stores. I'm not quite sure what they stock in there anymore.

From The Hollywood Reporter:
MTV redesigns logo, drops 'Music Television' (pic)

After 29 years, MTV has redesigned its logo and finally dropped "Music Television."

Basically it looks just like the old logo, only with some cropping. The design is getting flak from bloggers, but this is long overdue. Having "Music Television" on there was just a constant reminder that MTV was branding itself one way, programming itself another. Here's the logo...

Sextuagenarian Wasteland

My buddies and I are all growing a bit tired of the NFL once again hiring a band in their sixties for the Super Bowl Half-Time gig. We've got nothing against The Who, Bruce Springsteen, or The Rolling Stones per se. But it's getting comical watching them bounce around onstage as if they were still twentysomethings.

This year's highlight was Pete Townsend's "wardrobe malfunction" as he bared his senior midrift a few times while wailing on his guitar.

On the other hand, Carrie Underwood, in her skin-tight white catsuit, would have kept me from going to the kitchen for another beer.

Single Boob Theory

If you look closely, you can see Lee Harvey Oswald standing by the dingy holding his Mannlicher-Carcano rifle.

From The Smoking Gun:

TMZ Falls For JFK Photo Hoax

Photo that "could have changed history" actually from a Playboy shoot

In a colossal screw-up, the gossip web site TMZ today published a photo purporting to show John F. Kennedy frolicking on a yacht with a harem of naked women--except that the image actually appeared as part of a November 1967 Playboy photo spread, The Smoking Gun has learned. The TMZ hoax was billed as an "exclusive" featuring a photo that "could have altered world events" had it surfaced prior to JFK's presidential campaign. "It could have torpedoed his run, and changed world history," the site added. In reality, the photo appeared in story about Playboy's "Charter Yacht Party: How to Have a Ball on the Briny with an Able-Bodied Complement of Ship's Belles."

Now that the photo has been so easily debunked, it's fun to watch TMZ's "expert" testify to its authenticity.

Down with PC OPP

When I first heard about this, I thought it was a joke. But no. Eugene Robinson is most disappointed at Tiger Woods for not having a diverse stable of mistresses.

From the Washington Post:
Tiger's validation complex

...Here's my real question, though: What's with the whole Barbie thing?

No offense to anyone who actually looks like Barbie, but it really is striking how much the women who've been linked to Woods resemble one another. I'm talking about the long hair, the specific body type, even the facial features. Mattel could sue for trademark infringement.

This may be the most interesting aspect of the whole Tiger Woods story -- and one of the most disappointing. He seems to have been bent on proving to himself that he could have any woman he wanted. But from the evidence, his aim wasn't variety but some kind of validation.
