Ka-Boom

I came sooooo close for the March 3rd New Yorker "Cartoon Caption Contest # 135."

My half-way decent entry was:

"We can only stay for ONE drink."
The winning entrees:

  • "You said B.Y.O.B., right?" - ugh

  • "It's great to see you, but we can only stay about fifteen seconds." - very similiar to what I submitted (so, I kinda like it). But, I think MINE was a bit more subtle.

  • "Sorry we're late. Clearing customs was a nightmare." - pure crap

Ninety percent of the submissions probably reflected on the short time they could stay. Since brevity is the soul of wit, I went with: "We can just pop in for a sec." Their selection took a similar idea and padded it out to the extent of removing any unseemly humor.

I agree that winning time related entry was a bit wordy.

Your submission, as with the others is good.

I liked mine mainly because it referenced the idea that the couple only had a certain amount of time indirectly.
