Private Eyes, They're Watching You

Does anyone feel exploited?

From BBC News:

Facebook fixes embarrassing security flaw

Facebook has rushed to fix a security flaw that allowed users to eavesdrop on the live chats of their friends and see their pending friend requests.

The exploit used the site's privacy features - intended to protect a user - to expose the personal information.

...The exploit - originally reported by the blog TechCrunch - worked via an option in privacy settings that allows people to preview their profiles as it would appear to their friends.

...But it was never intended to show others what their friends were actually doing.

"For a limited period of time, a bug permitted some users' chat messages and pending friend requests to be made visible to their friends by manipulating the 'preview my profile' feature of Facebook privacy settings," Facebook said in a statement.

MillerCoors execs met with wholesalers last week in Las Vegas to show off some of the new campaigns and products. Chief among the new innovations is something called Miller Vortex, a bottle with specially designed interior grooves that “create a vortex as you’re pouring the beer,” according to a rep, who explained that the brand’s goal is to “create buzz and excitement and give consumers another reason to choose Miller.”

May Day Surprise

I just noticed this factoid from the Michigan.gov website regarding Michigan's Smoke Free Air Law:

"Smoking is not allowed in any indoor area as well as outdoor areas such as patios or rooftops where patrons are intended to receive service or consume food, beverages, or both."
Translation: I can't smoke a seegar OUTSIDE at my favorite coffee shop. Gov Granholm can kiss my ass (unless she bans that too).

Not So Fab

In retrospect, I suppose my entry for the 236th New Yorker "Caption Contest" was too clever by half.

I was doing a take that old Beatles classic "I Am The Walrus" which doesn't seem all that funny now:

"Goo goo ga joob" my eye. You knew I was saving those eggs for the party tonight.
The winners were all better:
  • “Dr. Ogden just called to say your mercury levels are on the high side.”

  • “Did you put 3,250 pounds of 'fresh mackerel' on my credit card?” - my favorite

  • “Those buckets of fish heads aren't going to take themselves out.”

Ear Flaps Sold Separately

At first I thought this new "portable" internet device being touted on Mademan.com was a joke. But the ASUS EeeKeyboard seems a real soon-to-be-released product. But I think they need to go back to the drawing board as even the name sounds cumbersome. I like "eBoard" myself.

The Anti-iPad

It’s portable in so far as you can move around one room with it. Instead of no keyboard, it’s pretty much all keyboard. It runs windows, and it definitely can’t be used ostentatiously to look cool in an overpriced coffee shop. Why get it?

Because in this uncertain time of the melding of the medias at a time when you can access Break Media Network content on your phones, televisions, iPads, and even on city busses in Los Angeles, everybody is clambering to be the all-in-one media device. And, frankly, the iPad is close, but if you want something to simply run in your living room, the ASUS EeeKeyboard is the ticket. It is, as yet, unreleased, but will sell for $600.

The Unusual Suspects

This week I felt victimized by the 235th New Yorker "Cartoon Caption" contest.

My entry was:

"Number five please take off your cap."

I humbly submit that this captured the aburdity of the situation depicted in the cartoon better than ANY of the finalists listed below.

  • "I'm six feet tall if I stand on my toes." - I don't think that any of the five are supposed to be talking. But even if I grant that the girl is the one speaking (I guess she could be), her comment is, at best, mediocre.

  • "O.K., now we'd like to see No. 4 in the tutu." - why?

  • "These were winnowed down from a group of thirty-seven using DNA testing." - did the New Yorker judges REALLY laugh at this?

Email Extractions Made Easy

I tried out this neat tool the other day: Digeus Jet Email Extractor. It lets me generate targeted email lists pulled from different news servers (which is next to impossible to do manually).

According to the Digeus website, Jet Email Extractor:
  • Captures email addresses at very high speed. Multithreaded. Average speed is 100,000 emails per hour!

  • Extracts not only user's email but also name for personalized emailings

  • Automatically removes duplicate and incorrect email addresses

  • Extraction is strongly targeted to specific audience (choose audience by selecting target-related news groups);

  • Exports the results into text file (mailing list)

Officers have been able to trace one of the thefts to the laundry room in West Akers Hall. It reportedly happened in mid-March.

In that case, officers say, the 19-year-old suspect stole 15 pairs of underwear from the laundry room. A witness reportedly saw him stealing the underwear and called police. Officers also used the dorm's surveillance cameras to identify the suspect.

Jobbed Out

And you thought Bill Gates played rough.

From eHappened.com:

Apple Products Can't Run Flash

The comments have been posed by Adobe that Apple’s refusal to run Adobe Flash on
it’s various products could drastically hurt the company. These comments were brought about in an official quarterly review filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchanges Commission on Friday, April 9, 2010. Adobe believes that with Apple’s refusal to run Adobe Flash, it makes it more difficult for Adobe products to perform and Adobe customers are then forced to try alternative technologies which they may not be familiar with.

It has been reported that Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, has described Adobe Flash as buggy and a memory blog. Almost three quarters of the videos on the worldwide web use Adobe Flash, so this statement doesn’t seem to be very accurate.

Print The Legend

Near the end of the 1970 bio-pic Patton, released in the U.S. 40 years ago today, the larger-than-life title character, Gen. George S. Patton, Jr., is shown having his likeness captured on canvas. The painting session is interrupted when the volatile old cavalryman has a heated phone call with a superior where he loudly declares that the large American troop presence in Germany should be used to take on their next military adversary, the Russians. Flabbergasted, the higher-ranking general on the other end of the line slams down the receiver exclaiming, “You’re mad!” Patton sends the artist away declaring that no one will be interested in a portrait of a madman.

I’ve often thought that the filmmakers staged this scene as a subtle commentary on their own approach in bringing Patton’s story to the big screen.

Suffer The Children

I think the church is overreacting here. A more vanilla, upbeat Stations of the Cross depiction kinda misses the point. No?

From The Washington Post:

Texas church bans child's photograph of Passion

Some find Jackson Potts II's photograph of a nightstick-wielding policeman beating a fallen, bleeding child violent and offensive, conjuring images of police brutality and child
abuse.

But to Jackson, a talented 10-year-old Houston photographer, and a cadre of art lovers, the disturbing image has religious symbolism.

Jackson shot the photograph for an exhibit depicting the Stations of the Cross, but the show's organizers rejected it, sparking a controversy some say is overshadowing remembrance of Jesus' final hours during the season of Lent.

...Jackson was assigned to portray the seventh Station of the Cross, where Jesus fell for a second time while carrying the cross to the site of his crucifixion. The home-schooled fifth-grader, who is taking a class on religious symbols in art at a Catholic church, decided to do a modern depiction of Christ being beaten by a Roman soldier.

In a case police call "outrageous and disturbing," the parents of a 3-year-old could face child abuse and abandonment charges today after reportedly leaving the toddler at Caesarland on Saturday following his birthday celebration.

Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer said the parents, a 33-year-old woman and 41-year-old man, took the boy to the Chuck E. Cheese-style restaurant for a party. The Future Is Now

Paul meets Peter.

From MSNBC:

Social Security needs Uncle Sam's IOUs — now

Government expected to borrow more, especially abroad, to start payback

The retirement nest egg of an entire generation is stashed away in this small town along the Ohio River: $2.5 trillion in IOUs from the federal government, payable to the Social Security Administration.

It's time to start cashing them in.

For more than two decades, Social Security collected more money in payroll taxes than it paid out in benefits — billions more each year.

Not anymore. This year, for the first time since the 1980s, when Congress last overhauled Social Security, the retirement program is projected to pay out more in benefits than it collects in taxes — nearly $29 billion more.

Sounds like a good time to start tapping the nest egg. Too bad the federal government already spent that money over the years on other programs, preferring to borrow from Social Security rather than foreign creditors. In return, the Treasury Department issued a stack of IOUs — in the form of Treasury bonds — which are kept in a nondescript office building just down the street from Parkersburg's municipal offices.

Close Shave

Phone call or bikini line? Make up your mind, I've got to adjust the car seat.

There's SOOO many unanswered questions in this story. Why was the ex in the car at all? Since she was driving, you'd think it was her car...right? Was he going to use it after dropping her off? Did she grab the razor at the last second while heading out the door OR does she keep it in the glove compartment? And how does the new guy feel about his girlfriend doing her grooming with the ex nearby?

From CBS 4, South Florida:

Driving On Razor's Edge: Shaving Behind The Wheel

Trooper Gary Dunick explained, "She said she was meeting her boyfriend in Key West and wanted to be ready for the visit."

Cold Stones Are Cool

If the films nominated for Academy Awards in 2010 were Olympic sports, figure skating—full of sights, sounds, and lots of media attention—would be Avatar, the halfpipe—entertaining and edgy—Inglourious Basterds, and hockey—an unglamorous study in grinding perseverance—The Hurt Locker. For Americans, curling wouldn’t appear until “The Best Animated Short” category: "A Matter of Loaf and Death" starring Wallace and Gromit.

One of the noteworthy, albeit minor, stories coming out of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver was some unexpectedly positive murmuring about curling. The genuine curiosity exhibited about the sport could very well be a precursor for more mainstream American interest. U.S. team captain John Shuster expressed satisfaction that Vancouver had helped to put curling “on the map.” Of course, a lot of the attention curling received this year was due to things having nothing to do with the sport itself. Such as the tittering over the Norwegian team’s garishly patterned pants. So, it remains to be seen if curling has the potential to attain more than hacky sack-like fad status in the U.S.

I’ve never set foot on a curling surface myself but I’ve been a closet fan for years. Although, I didn’t realize I was in the closet or that such a closet even existed.

Here's a 1995 Newsweek piece by Clifford Stoll predicting the demise of the Internet. I think there's another article in the same issue discussing why Deep Blue Something, who had just released "Breakfast At Tiffanys," would be the most influential band of the 90's.

FWIW, Stoll recently joked about being wrong here.

The Internet? Bah!

Hype alert: Why cyberspace isn't, and will never be, nirvana

After two decades online, I'm perplexed. It's not that I haven't had a gas of a good time on the Internet. I've met great people and even caught a hacker or two. But today, I'm uneasy about this most trendy and oversold community. Visionaries see a future of telecommuting workers, interactive libraries and multimedia classrooms. They speak of electronic town meetings and virtual communities. Commerce and business will shift from offices and malls to networks and modems. And the freedom of digital networks will make government more democratic.

Baloney. Do our computer pundits lack all common sense? The truth in no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works.

The Man Doth Protest Too Much (Methinks)

On his website, Nick Waters sets out to explore the "chick flick" genre in order to better "understand the opposite sex."

Two things occurred to me as I scanned his site.

First, why did he categorize Couples Retreat and Atonement as chick flicks? Instead of just fielding random suggestions from friends and family, he really should have established some sort of clear definition.

Second, while I probably don't understand women, I do get men. I think Waters is just trying to get laid.

From 30 Chick Flicks in 30 Days:

How far would you go to understand the opposite sex?

That question has helped to fuel the idea behind this site, “30 Chick Flicks in 30 Days: One Guy’s Exploration of Romance Through Movies Loved by Women”.

First, you should know that I’m that “guy” exploring these films. Second, my name is Nick. I’m a husband, and have been for seven years. Third, no one put me up to this.
And fourth, I’m not some professional film critic. I live in a small town in southern Oklahoma. I work in communications.

No Reasonable Expectation of Change

This CNET news proves that the more things "change," the more they stay the same. BTW, I'm not necessarily knocking the Obama administration over this. It just once again demonstrates how complicated the real world can be.

Feds push for tracking cell phones

...the Obama administration has argued that warrantless tracking is permitted because Americans enjoy no "reasonable expectation of privacy" in their--or at least their cell phones'--whereabouts. U.S. Department of Justice lawyers say that "a customer's Fourth Amendment rights are not violated when the phone company reveals to the government its own records" that show where a mobile device placed and received calls.

Not that the world has been demanding one, but a company in Dallas, Texas is marketing an electric incinerating toilet called the "INCINOLET."

According to their website:

INCINOLET uses electric heat to reduce human waste (urine, solids, paper) to a small amount of clean ash, which is dumped periodically into the garbage. INCINOLET remains clean because waste never touches the bowl surface. A bowl liner, dropped into the bowl prior to use, captures the waste, then both liner and its content drop into the incinerator chamber when the foot pedal is pushed. You can use INCINOLET at any time-even while it is in cycle.
Seems simple enough. But, I'd read the manual VERY carefully.
